We are spending longer hours at work, although we desire more work-life balance. According to the World Population Review, the ten countries with the longest workweeks averaged 42.2 hours.

Given how much time you spend at work, wouldn’t it be better if you could be more efficient at your job? The Harvard Business Review says that workers spend as much as 41 percent of the average workday on tasks that don’t add value.

Modern work poses its challenges.

There was a time you could turn up at your job, confident that the same company would employ you for 40 years. There would be a career track for you to follow.

The techniques and technology to do your job would remain stable over time. You’d retire to spend your golden years happily in a deck chair, watching the sunset.

Not anymore. Today, retirement is a fantasy for many. No one’s job is guaranteed.

The factory worker of the Industrial Age is gone, replaced by the knowledge worker. This new creature must constantly retool and relearn if they wish to keep their place, much less advance.

The situation is enough to overwhelm the best equipped. Many modern workers don’t fall into that category. Gallup’s 2021 State of the Global Workplace poll said that 57 percent of US and Canadian workers feel stressed every day. This percentage is up 8 points from last year and has been trending upward since 2009.

This is not a situation isolated to North America. Around the world, 43 percent of workers say they feel stressed all of the time.

This is in no small part due to the uncertainty and insecurity of modern work.

Several factors are driving this, such as the exponential changes in technology, the challenge to get more done in less time and the need to make increasingly complex decisions with less information in a shorter time.
